The garrigue !
Virtually all of south-eastern France is covered. On our arid limestone plateaux, intensive oak growing, sheep farming and forest fires are just some of the factors that have shaped these typical Mediterranean landscapes over the centuries.
It can be confused with maquis, which grows on siliceous soils, as in Corsica, but has a similar origin.
